Martin 5 18 Terz Mahogany Spruce 1945
The Martin 5-18 Terz Mahogany Spruce from 1945 is a rare gem in very good condition, offering the charm and tonal beauty that only a vintage Martin can provide. This parlor-sized guitar, known for its comfortable playability and rich sound, showcases the expert craftsmanship and quality materials that Martin is renowned for.
Constructed with a solid mahogany body and a solid Adirondack spruce top, the 5-18 Terz delivers a warm, resonant tone with a clear, articulate voice. The non-scalloped X-bracing supports the top, enhancing its strength and projection while maintaining the guitar's natural resonance. The body is adorned with tortoise binding, multi-line purfling, and a black pickguard, adding a touch of elegance to its classic natural gloss finish.
The mahogany neck features a V profile and a rosewood fingerboard with a 16" radius, offering smooth playability and comfort. Pearl dot inlays and a rosewood headstock overlay add to the guitar's vintage aesthetic. The original open-gear tuning machines ensure stable tuning and accurate intonation, while the rosewood bridge with 54 mm string spacing provides excellent string action and sustain.
As far as the condition goes, it plays fantastically and it sounds awesome. There are two patches, one in the top and one near the end-pin, that have been applied to repair cracks. Besides that the pickguard isn't original, which has probably been replaced when they resprayed the top of the terz a few years ago. Furthermore, the entire body (including the neck and headstock) has received an overspray, which was probably done an even longer time ago. Last (but not least!), the heel has been repaired some time ago and a new piece of wood has been inserted.
Despite its smaller size, the Martin 5-18 Terz produces a surprisingly full and rich sound, making it a perfect choice for both fingerstyle playing and light strumming. Its 21.4" scale length and 1.61" nut width contribute to its playability, making it an ideal instrument for musicians seeking a compact, yet powerful acoustic guitar.
This 1945 Martin 5-18 Terz comes with a softshell case. Whether you're a collector or a player, this vintage Martin offers a unique combination of historical significance, exquisite craftsmanship, and timeless tone, making it a truly exceptional instrument.
