PRS Private Stock Tonare Grand 25th Ann The Tree 2014
This PRS Private Stock Tonare Grand is built with wood from "The Tree," perhaps the world's most coveted mahogany, a legendary guitar maker since the 1980s. This 2014 25th Anniversary model combines this remarkable material with a torrefied Adirondack spruce top and custom Private Stock inlays, resulting in an instrument that is both visually and sonically at the pinnacle of excellence.
The story of "The Tree" is as fascinating as the wood itself. This 30-meter-tall mahogany tree stood in the Chichibul rainforest in Honduras until 1965, with a base measuring no less than 15 meters in diameter. After being felled by hand, the tree ended up in a steep ravine where it lay inaccessible for 20 years. Since its recovery in the mid-1980s, this wood has grown into the most sought-after mahogany in the world, possessing a unique grain and tonal character. It is denser than ordinary mahogany and has a warmer, almost rosewood-like tone that sets it apart from all other specimens.
In 2010, Paul Reed Smith celebrated the 25th anniversary of his company with a limited series of Tonare Grand guitars made from this legendary wood. This 2014 Private Stock version goes a step further with its AAAA-grade torrefied Adirondack spruce top and the craftsmanship of Paul Myles, who was responsible for the custom inlay work. The combination of snakewood binding, ebony fingerboard, and 25th Anniversary inlay makes this a visual masterpiece that perfectly complements the quality of the wood.
In terms of tone and playability, this Tonare Grand delivers exactly what you would expect from these materials. The sound is full, broad, and refined, with powerful projection that effortlessly conveys all the nuances of your playing style. The Tree mahogany provides that characteristic warmth and sustain, while the torrifé Adirondack top adds clarity and definition. The wide neck profile offers excellent playing comfort for both fingerstyle and more powerful techniques.
This Private Stock is in excellent condition. The guitar has some light signs of wear and a few very small dings, along with a larger scratch on the top near the lower bout. The guitar comes in an Ameritage hardshell case with accompanying documentation and a TFOA passport. A unique opportunity to own a piece of guitar history built from perhaps the most legendary wood in instrument making!
