Gibson J45 Banner 1942
This 1942 Gibson J45 Banner is a first year example of Gibson’s most iconic slope shoulder jumbo, showcasing the pre wartime specifications that laid the foundation for its legendary status. With its solid mahogany back and sides and Sitka spruce top, it delivers the rich, balanced tone that defines the acoustic sound of this era.
The distinctive Banner headstock with “Only a Gibson is Good Enough” is one of its most recognizable features, paired with a solid mahogany neck and neck block that would change in later years. Another standout detail is the classic firestripe pickguard, a feature only seen on early 1942 models.
Over its lifetime, the guitar has seen some wear, including a neck reset and professionally repaired cracks on the top, sides and back, with the most recent being a larger crack on the back. A respray was also carried out decades ago and is now barely visible under blacklight. These repairs have preserved the structural integrity while ensuring excellent playability and intonation.
Tonally, this J45 captures everything you would expect from a vintage Gibson. It offers a powerful yet controlled low end, clear mids and sweet highs, all wrapped in that signature Gibson compression and projection. The scalloped X bracing enhances responsiveness, making it equally at home with fingerstyle playing or strong, rhythmic strumming.
Delivered in a non original hardshell case with TFOA passport, this 1942 J45 Banner is a rare and inspiring example of Gibson’s golden era craftsmanship, equally appealing to collectors and players.
